How to Care for Teak Outdoor Furniture: The Complete Guide
Share
One of the biggest reasons customers at Jr's Patio choose teak is the low maintenance. But low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. Here is everything you need to know to keep your teak outdoor furniture looking beautiful for decades.
Understanding How Teak Ages
Fresh Grade A teak has a warm honey-golden color. Left untreated outdoors, it naturally weathers to an elegant silver-gray patina over 9-12 months. Both looks are valid — it comes down to personal preference. Neither affects the durability or longevity of the wood.
- Want to keep the golden color? Apply teak oil 1-2 times per year.
- Love the silver-gray look? Do nothing. Your furniture will look better every year.
Cleaning Teak Furniture
A simple cleaning once or twice a year keeps your teak in great shape.
- Rinse with water to remove loose dirt.
- Scrub gently with mild dish soap and a soft brush, going with the grain.
- Rinse completely and allow to dry in the sun before applying any oil.
Avoid pressure washing — a soft brush and soapy water is all you need.
Oiling Teak Furniture
If you want to maintain the golden color, apply a quality teak oil once in spring and again in fall.
- Clean and completely dry the furniture first.
- Apply teak oil with a clean cloth, going with the grain.
- Let soak 15-20 minutes, then wipe off excess.
- Allow to cure 24 hours before use.
Dealing with Mildew
In coastal areas like San Diego, you may occasionally notice dark spots or mildew. Mix one part white vinegar with four parts water, apply with a brush, let sit 5 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly.
Teak Furniture in San Diego
San Diego's climate is actually ideal for teak. Low humidity and consistent sunshine mean your teak ages beautifully. Many of our customers tell us their teak sets look even better after 5-10 years than the day they bought them.
