Outdoor Dining Is San Diego's Best Amenity — Get the Set Right

With the weather we get in San Diego, an outdoor dining set earns its keep year-round — weeknight dinners, weekend brunches, and every holiday that's "too nice to eat inside." But a dining set is a bigger commitment than a couple of chairs, so it pays to choose deliberately.

Step 1: How Many Seats Do You Actually Need?

Count your household, then add two for guests as a baseline. A 4-seat set suits a balcony or bistro corner; 6-seat is the sweet spot for most families; 8+ seats (often with an extendable table) is for serious entertainers. Don't oversize "just in case" — an empty 10-seat table swallows a patio.

Step 2: Table Shape and Footprint

Rectangular tables seat the most and fit long patios. Round tables are better for conversation and tight or square spaces (and there's no corner to bump). Square works for 4. Rule of thumb: leave 36 inches between the table edge and any wall or planter so chairs can pull out and people can walk behind them.

Step 3: Pick a Material Built for the Coast

Same rules as the rest of your patio. Powder-coated aluminum won't rust and stays cool-ish in the sun. Grade-A teak is the premium, decades-long choice and shrugs off salt air. All-weather wicker on aluminum gives a softer look without rust risk. For tabletops, tempered glass, aluminum, and teak all hold up; avoid anything that can swell or warp when it gets damp.

Step 4: Chairs — Comfort Is Worth It

You sit in dining chairs longer than you think. Look for contoured seats, and consider swivel or sling chairs for all-day comfort. If your set includes cushions, confirm they're Sunbrella-grade so they don't fade or mildew.

Bar-Height vs. Standard Height

Standard dining height (about 29-30") suits most patios. Bar- or counter-height sets create a casual, social vibe and pair well with a view or a raised deck — just make sure everyone at the table is comfortable up high.
