Patio Umbrella Buyer's Guide: Market vs. Cantilever, Sizing & Shade
Share
Shade Is Half the Battle in a San Diego Summer
266 sunny days a year is wonderful — until you're trying to eat lunch on the patio at noon in July. The right umbrella turns an unusable sunny patio into your favorite spot. Here's how to pick one that fits and lasts.
Market vs. Cantilever Umbrellas
Market umbrellas have a center pole and usually go through a hole in your table (or a freestanding base). They're affordable, simple, and perfect for covering a dining set. Cantilever (offset) umbrellas have the pole off to the side with the canopy reaching out over your space — so there's no center pole in the way. They're ideal for shading a sectional, lounge chairs, or a spa, and many rotate and tilt to chase the sun. Cantilevers cost more and need a heavier base.
How to Size Your Umbrella
Your canopy should extend about 2 feet beyond the edges of whatever it's shading. Quick guide:
6-7.5 ft: bistro sets, 2-4 chairs, small balconies.
9 ft: the most popular size — covers a standard 4-6 seat dining table.
10-11 ft: large dining tables and small lounge areas.
11-13 ft cantilever: sectionals, big lounge zones, or shading a spa.
Fabric Matters (Especially Near the Coast)
Cheap umbrella fabric fades in a single San Diego season. Look for a solution-dyed canopy — where the color is locked into the fiber instead of printed on top — so it resists fading, mildew, and salt for years. Solution-dyed acrylic and quality marine-grade fabrics hold up far better than bargain printed material. It's the difference between a 2-year umbrella and a 10-year one, so ask what the canopy is made of before you buy.
Don't Forget the Base
An undersized base is how umbrellas end up in the pool. As a rule, a freestanding market umbrella needs roughly 50+ lbs of base; cantilevers need much more (often 4 weight plates or a fillable base). If your umbrella goes through a table, the table helps stabilize it but you still want a proper base underneath. We'll match the right base to your umbrella.
A Few Coastal Tips
Always close your umbrella in high wind — no umbrella is wind-proof open. Choose a tilt or crank-lift mechanism for daily ease. And if you're right on the water, rinse the canopy occasionally to keep salt from building up.
